Fact about Kilogram

Baci fact: A kilogram [symbol: kg] is the base unit of mass in the SI (International System of Units). It is also known as “kilogramme.” Based on fixed fundamental constants of nature, the kilogram nowadays is defined in terms of the second and the meter. The actual size of the unit remained the same, even though the definition of the kilogram was changed in 2019. Mentioned changes were intended to enhance the definitions of SI base units.

History: The name of this mass unit was derived from the French [kilogramme], which in turn came from adding Greek terminology meaning [a thousand] before the Late Latin term [gramma] that meant “a small weight.”

With an SI prefix, the kilogram is the only SI base unit. SI is a system based on the system of units: meter-kilogram-second rather than a centimeter-gram-second system. This is at least partly due to the lack of coherence and inconsistencies that can occur through the use of centimeter-gram-second systems, like those between the systems of electromagnetic and electrostatic units.

In 1794, the kilogram was initially defined as the mass of one liter of water at its freezing point, though, ultimately defined, since measuring the mass of a volume of water was cumbersome and imprecise.

In 2019, based on Planck’s constant and changes to the definition of the second, a new definition of the kilogram was introduced. Prior to that definition, the kilogram was defined as being equivalent to the mass of a physical prototype, a cylinder made of a platinum-iridium alloy, which was an inadequate measure. The mass of the initial prototype for the kilogram now weighs 50 micrograms less than other copies of the standard kilogram.

Use: The kilogram is used globally in almost all fields and applications, with the exception of countries like the United States, where the kilogram is used in many areas, at least to some degree [such as science, government, industry, and the military] but normally not in everyday applications.

Facts about Stone

Basic Facts: Stone weight or the stone [symbol: st.] is an imperial and English unit of mass equivalent to 14 pounds [approx. 6.35 kg]. Europe’s various “stones” were replaced by or adapted to the kilogram from the mid-19th century on with the origin of metrication.

History: The term “stone” comes from the use of stones for weights, a practice that dates back into antiquity. In Roman periods stone weights were crafted to multiples of the Roman pound.

Use: The stone stays widely used in the United Kingdom and Ireland for human body weight. In those countries, people may typically be said to weigh, e.g., “11 stone 4” [11 stones and 4 pounds], instead of saying “158 pounds”, that is the conventional way of expressing the same weight in the United States or “72 kilograms” as used in most of the other countries. The stone is used to express body weights in many sports in both Britain and Ireland, such as professional wrestling, boxing, and horse racing. Germanic-speaking northern European countries and England formerly used various standardized “stones” for trade, with their values varying from about 5 to 40 local pounds [approx. 3 to 15 kg] depending on objects weighed and the location.
