Pressure – Convert Millibars to Atmospheres

There is no question that pressure unit conversions are one of the most common types of conversions. Just think of barometers for a second. As you probably already know, barometers are instruments that are used to measure pressure. One of the most interesting things about barometers is that they use a wide variety of units of measure depending on the method used to measure pressure, on the country they are manufactured, and the intended use. And this is where millibars and atmospheres come into place. They are a part of this wide variety of units of measure.

What Is A Millibar?

millibars to atmospheres

Simply put, one millibar is defined as the pressure of one newton per square meter and is equal to one-thousandth of a bar and it is also equivalent to one hectopascal.

One of the things that you need to know about the millibar is that this is a non-SI metric unit of pressure. Millibars are often abbreviated as mbar.

What Is Atmosphere?

The atmosphere was originally defined as the pressure of 760 millimeters of mercury at standard gravity at 0 °C. However, in 1954, it was redefined to be equal to 1,013,250 dynes.

The atmosphere is a reference measure of pressure equal to 101,325 pascals or 1,013,250 dynes. Atmospheres are often abbreviated as atm.

Millibars To Atmospheres – Calculating By Hand

Sometimes, you may need to convert millibars to atmospheres by hand. Well, in order to do this, you just need to know the conversion ratio between these two units of pressure.

In case you don’t know:

1 Millibar = 0.0009869232667160128 Atmospheres

Practical Example #1: Let’s say that you want to convert 2050 millibars to atmospheres.

Considering that you already know the conversion ratio:

1 Millibar = 0.0009869232667160128 Atmospheres

and that you want to convert 2050 millibars to atmospheres:

2050 Millibars = 2050 X 0.0009869232667160128 Atmospheres

2050 Millibars = 2.467308166790032 Atmospheres

Practical Example #2: Let’s say that you want to convert 50000 millibars to atmospheres.

Considering that you already know the conversion ratio:

1 Millibar = 0.0009869232667160128 Atmospheres

and that you want to convert 50000 millibars to atmospheres:

50000 Millibars = 50000 X 0.0009869232667160128 Atmospheres
