Fact about Kilogram

Baci fact: A kilogram [symbol: kg] is the base unit of mass in the SI (International System of Units). It is also known as “kilogramme.” Based on fixed fundamental constants of nature, the kilogram nowadays is defined in terms of the second and the meter. The actual size of the unit remained the same, even though the definition of the kilogram was changed in 2019. Mentioned changes were intended to enhance the definitions of SI base units.

History: The name of this mass unit was derived from the French [kilogramme], which in turn came from adding Greek terminology meaning [a thousand] before the Late Latin term [gramma] that meant “a small weight.”

With an SI prefix, the kilogram is the only SI base unit. SI is a system based on the system of units: meter-kilogram-second rather than a centimeter-gram-second system. This is at least partly due to the lack of coherence and inconsistencies that can occur through the use of centimeter-gram-second systems, like those between the systems of electromagnetic and electrostatic units.

In 1794, the kilogram was initially defined as the mass of one liter of water at its freezing point, though, ultimately defined, since measuring the mass of a volume of water was cumbersome and imprecise.

In 2019, based on Planck’s constant and changes to the definition of the second, a new definition of the kilogram was introduced. Prior to that definition, the kilogram was defined as being equivalent to the mass of a physical prototype, a cylinder made of a platinum-iridium alloy, which was an inadequate measure. The mass of the initial prototype for the kilogram now weighs 50 micrograms less than other copies of the standard kilogram.

Use: The kilogram is used globally in almost all fields and applications, with the exception of countries like the United States, where the kilogram is used in many areas, at least to some degree [such as science, government, industry, and the military] but normally not in everyday applications.

Facts about Ton

Basic facts: A ton is a unit of measure of weight and mass. In the US and Canada, the ton, also called the short ton, is defined as 908 kilograms or 2,000 pounds. In the UK, the ton, periodically referred to as the long ton, is defined as 1,016 kg or 2,240 avoirdupois pounds. The tonne, defined in the SI (International System of Units) and otherwise known as the metric ton is defined as 1,000 kilograms or 2,204.623 pounds.

History: The term [ton] is derived from the [tun] This term was applied to a large cask that could weigh around 2,000 pounds, contain between 175 to 213 imperial gallons, and could occupy around 60 cubic feet, or 1.7 m3 of space. The metric ton, or tonne, is the preferred definition of the ton, although various definitions of the ton are still used in particular countries.

Use: The short ton is used predominantly in the United States, while the long ton is used in the United Kingdom along with other countries that still use the imperial system, and the tonne is used worldwide. Although both the United States and the United Kingdom, and some other countries still use other definitions of the ton, the tonne is the legally established form of the ton for use in trade.
