Facts about Meter

Basic facts: In Commonwealth spelling – metre, or in American spelling – meter. Metre [symbol: m] comes from the French unit mètre and from the Greek noun “measure”. Meter is the base unit of length and distance in SI [the International System of Units]. It is defined as the distance traveled by light in 1/299 792 458 of a second. The existing definition was adopted in 1983 and changed slightly in 2002 to clarify that the metre is a measure of proper length.

History: Initially, the meter was defined as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole, in 1793. This changed when the international prototype metre was established as the length of a prototype meter bar [made of an alloy of 90% platinum and 10% iridium] measured at the melting point of ice, in 1793. The meter was again redefined, this time in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86, In 1960. The existing definition of the meter is actually the same as the definition that was adopted in 1983, with slight changes due to the modification in the definition of the second.

Use: The meter is used worldwide (being the SI unit of length) in many applications such as measuring distance, height, length, width, etc. The US is one significant exception in that it mainly uses US customary units like yards, inches, feet, and miles rather meters in daily use.

Facts about Centimeter

Basic facts: A centimeter [symbol: cm] is a unit of length in the SI [International System of Units], centimeter [American spelling], or a centimetre [international spelling]. It is represented as 1/100 meters.  A centimeter is around the width of the fingernail of an average adult person.

History: A centimeter is based on the SI unit meter, it is equal to one-hundredth of a meter as the prefix “centi” indicates.  Based on a decimal system, metric prefixes range from factors of 10-18 to 1018, with the base [in this case the meter] having a factor of 1 and no prefix. In the now deprecated centimetre–gram–second [CGS] system of units, the centimeter was the base unit of length.

Use: Like the meter, the centimeter, is used in all kinds of applications worldwide [in countries that have experienced metrication] in the cases where a smaller denomination of the meter is needed. Outside of countries like the United States height is commonly measured in centimeters. In addition to its use in the measurement of length, centimeters are used to make conversions from map scale to real-world scale [kilometers], also to report the level of rainfall as measured by a rain gauge.
